Deco, the cocky lead singer, is an exciting antagonist as he starts getting carried away with his own stage presence (a dig at Bono, perhaps?). But the novel is elevated by Doyle’s exceptional characterisation, witty dialogue, and deep-felt love of music.Įach member of the band is beautifully drawn, from quiet student doctor James on the piano to the three backing singers who make up the Commitmentettes and dare each other to get off with the trumpet player from Dean who sneakily discovers jazz and starts getting aspirations to nervous Outspan, mortified when his mum turns up to their first gig. The band forms, rehearses, starts generating some interest on the local scene, then disintegrates suddenly just before the short book’s end. Adverts go out in the local press, and Jimmy begins building the band. When wannabe guitarist Outspan and bassist-without-a-bass Derek come to him for advice, not convinced that their current band leader’s obsession with getting the right punctuation for the band’s name should be top priority, Jimmy sees his chance, and begins coordinating the group that will come to define Dublin Soul.
