I believe most of us with children can even understand some of Abigail’s reactions, more specifically her wish to protect her daughter. But if you want a story that keeps you turning pages and moving from suspect to suspect, this won’t disappoint you. If you’re looking for a thriller, this probably isn’t the book for you. Since the synopsis above covers much of the plot, I’m going to share only my thoughts regarding the writing. It begins with a tragedy and mystery, but McDonald manages to weave many things into her multi-layered debut novel. This story, told by both Mother and Daughter’s viewpoints, captured my interest almost immediately. With flashbacks of Olivia’s own resolve to uncover family secrets, this taut and emotional novel asks: how well do you know your children? And how well do they know you?
